Life story

Josephine Hilgard was born March 12, 1906, in Napoleon, Ohio. She studied at Smith College, graduating in 1928, then earned a doctorate in child psychology at Yale in 1933.

She married psychologist Ernest Hilgard in 1931, and they had two children. She went on to earn a medical degree at Stanford in 1940 and trained as a psychoanalyst.

Her clinical work included posts in Chicago and at Chestnut Lodge in Maryland, later a children's clinic in San Francisco and a clinical professorship in psychiatry at Stanford.

She pointed out that some people fall ill at the anniversary of an important event, and she studied hypnosis as a way to ease pain, especially in children. She died in Palo Alto in 1989.
