How Rossford began
Rossford began in 1898 as a company town, built by Edward Ford of the glassmaking family to house workers at the Edward Ford Plate Glass Company plant he built along the Maumee River. Ford named it by combining his own surname with that of his second wife, Caroline Ross, following a pattern his father, John Baptiste Ford, had already set at Ford City, Pennsylvania. The plant grew into the Libbey-Owens-Ford Glass Company, one of the region's major industrial employers for most of the twentieth century, and the village around it incorporated in 1939 within the former Ross Township, becoming a full part of Wood County's Toledo-area industrial belt.
Settled 1898 (company town built by Edward Ford), platted 1898, on 173 acres Edward Ford purchased along the Maumee River, incorporated village, 1939, by Edward Ford, Edward Ford Plate Glass Company.
Where the name comes from
Rossford combines the surname of founder Edward Ford with that of his second wife, Caroline Ross.
Before the town
No mound, earthwork or named Native village specific to the Rossford townsite was found in any source consulted; the county's own 1897 history, written just before the town was founded, states that no such evidence exists anywhere in Wood County. The Treaty of Greenville set aside a reserve at the nearby Rapids of the Maumee.

Stories
A glassmaking dynasty builds its second company town
Edward Ford was not the first in his family to found a town around a glass plant. His father, John Baptiste Ford, had already built Ford City, Pennsylvania, as a company town for his own plate-glass works, and when Edward struck out to build his own factory on the Maumee River in 1898, he followed the same model: buy the land, build the plant, and build the town around it to house and hold the workforce. He named the result Rossford, folding his own surname together with that of his second wife, Caroline Ross, and built the Ford Club nearby so workers would have somewhere to socialize close to home. The plant Edward Ford built grew, through a 1930 merger, into Libbey-Owens-Ford, a name that would anchor the local economy for most of the twentieth century -- a company town that outlasted the industry pattern that produced it.

56,916 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
