How Milton Center began

Milton Center, surveyed in February 1857 for Andrew Hutchinson and Lewis Dubbs on swampland once notorious for its mosquitoes, took its name from the Milton Township it sits at the center of. It grew slowly around a post office established in 1861 before incorporating as a village in June 1869, survived fires in 1885 and 1890 and a serious 1895 train collision, and saw its population nearly triple between 1880 and 1890, part of the same countywide growth spurt the 1880s oil and gas boom brought to much of rural Wood County.

Platted surveyed by Hiram Davis, February 1857, incorporated village, ordered June 8, 1869, after a petition filed March 25, 1869, by Andrew Hutchinson and Lewis Dubbs.

Where the name comes from

Milton Center takes its name from Milton Township, within which it sits.

Stories

The Anti-Hunter Association of 1890

In November 1890 the farmers around Milton Center formed a Farmers' Anti-Hunter Association. William Bacome was its president, J. R. Huff vice-president, H. B. Dubbs secretary and Antoine Louy treasurer, with H. C. Strow as game warden and five farmers on the executive committee. The 1897 county history says its object was to prosecute violators of the game laws and to prove to visiting hunters that farmers had rights which must be respected. It is a small record of how, within sixty years of the first cabins, a township once known for its bears and mosquitoes was organizing against visiting hunters.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Milton Center, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,779 days of records, 1893-02-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
