How Kinsman Township, Trumbull County began

Kinsman Township, the only township of its name in Ohio, is named for an early settling family and centers on the unincorporated community of Kinsman at the intersection of State Routes 5 and 7. Its best-known landmark is the Clarence Darrow Octagon House, built around 1854, where the future lawyer -- born nearby in Farmdale in 1857 to an abolitionist cabinetmaker father -- lived from about age seven to sixteen, staging mock trials with other boys years before he became one of America's most famous defense attorneys. The township also holds the 1828 Swift-Kinsman House, the Dr. Peter Allen House and a historic Congregational-Presbyterian church, all clustered near the same crossroads.

Where the name comes from

The township is named for a local family of early settlers surnamed Kinsman; the same family or its connections also gave their name to Judge Frederick Kinsman, whose house and office stood in Warren, though no source consulted here traces the exact family relationship between the township's namesakes and the Warren Kinsmans.

Before the town

No Native village, camp or treaty event specific to Kinsman Township is recorded in the sources we reviewed. The township sits in Trumbull County's northeastern corner near the Pennsylvania line, within the wider region the county's 1882 history describes as Delaware-occupied hunting ground used seasonally by Seneca and Mingo bands through the 1700s, but no source found names a site inside the township's present boundaries.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Seneca, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga).

Stories

Mock trials in an octagon house

Clarence Darrow was born in 1857 in Farmdale, a few miles from Kinsman, the son of Amirus Darrow, a cabinetmaker so openly abolitionist and religiously skeptical that the town knew him as the 'village infidel,' and Emily Eddy Darrow, an early advocate for women's suffrage -- a household that raised its son to argue unpopular positions before he ever saw a courtroom. The family lived from about 1864 to 1873, when Darrow was roughly seven to sixteen years old, in an eight-sided house built around 1854 on the Kinsman crossroads, one of the mid-1800s fad houses built to the octagon-plan theories of phrenologist Orson Squire Fowler; there, Darrow and other local boys are remembered to have staged their own mock trials years before he grew up to become one of the most famous defense attorneys in American history, arguing the Scopes trial and the Leopold and Loeb case among many others. When the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, it qualified not on its architecture -- unremarkable among Ohio's surviving octagon houses -- but explicitly because of who had lived there as a boy, and the state did not add a historical marker to make the connection official until 2000.
