How Higginsport began
Higginsport was first platted in 1804 as White Haven, a plan that was abandoned, before Colonel Robert Higgins replatted it with 114 lots on February 28, 1816, and gave it his name. It sits on the Ohio River in Lewis Township and is the village near which George Webb and Joseph Pore discovered White Burley tobacco in 1864, a crop that by 1883 supported seventeen tobacco warehouses shipping roughly two million pounds a year down the river to New Orleans. It was the birthplace of major-league pitcher Harry 'Slim' Sallee, a member of the 1919 Cincinnati Reds.
Platted 1816-02-28, by Colonel Robert Higgins (1816 replatting); earlier platted as White Haven in 1804.
Where the name comes from
Named for Colonel Robert Higgins, who replatted the village with 114 lots in 1816; the site had earlier been platted in 1804 under the name White Haven, a plan that was abandoned.

Stories
A tobacco river town's ballplayer
Higginsport was an Ohio River tobacco town in the nineteenth century. The historical marker credits George Webb and Joseph Pore with the discovery of White Burley tobacco in the summer of 1864 on Captain Frederick Kautz's farm near Higginsport, and by 1883, according to Wikipedia, the village had seventeen tobacco warehouses and 32 buyers shipping about two million pounds a year down the Ohio River to New Orleans. Harry Franklin 'Slim' Sallee was born in Higginsport on February 3, 1885. A left-handed pitcher, he played parts of fourteen seasons (1908-1921) for the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants and Cincinnati Reds, with a career record of 174-143. In 1919 he went 21-7 with a 2.06 earned run average for the Reds, the best season of his career, and became just the second pitcher up to that time to win more games than he walked in a season. He was a member of the Reds team that won the 1919 World Series against the Chicago White Sox. Sallee died on March 22, 1950, and is buried at Confidence Cemetery in Georgetown, Ohio.

50,410 days of records, 1887-09-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
