How Haviland began

Haviland, in the east of Blue Creek Township, Paulding County, grew up where the Cincinnati Northern and the Findlay, Fort Wayne & Western railroads crossed; the post office opened in 1892, the Cincinnati Northern depot was built in 1893, and the village was incorporated in 1896. It held 186 residents in 1900, rose to a peak of 270 in 1920, and has since settled back to about 160. The FFW&W was pulled up in 1919, a new school opened in 1922, and the Haviland and Scott schools merged in 1933.

Stories

Where Two Railroads Crossed

Haviland was a railroad village, and the west2k station survey describes why. The Cincinnati Northern ran through, and the Findlay, Fort Wayne & Western (the line built in 1888 as the New York, Mahoning & Western) crossed it, so the two roads shared a union depot between Cedar and Main Streets just south of the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton crossing; Cincinnati Northern valuation records date the depot to 1893, the year after the post office opened, though the same listing also says it was built in the 1880s. The village incorporated in 1896 and reached 270 residents by 1920. But the FFW&W went broke, and in 1919 its rails were taken out of the southern part of Paulding County, leaving Haviland with the Cincinnati Northern alone. The depot itself stood until the late 1960s.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Haviland, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
