How Fremont began

Fremont grew up on the site of Junquindundeh, a Wyandot village at the lower rapids of the Sandusky River, where the U.S. Army built Fort Sandusky in 1812 and, after it was rebuilt and enlarged the next spring, Fort Stephenson -- the post Major George Croghan's garrison defended in the Battle of Fort Stephenson of August 1813. A settlement grew around the fort after the war under the name Lower Sandusky, became the seat of the newly formed Sandusky County in 1821, and was renamed Fremont in 1849 for explorer and soldier John C. Fremont. The city became a cutlery and manufacturing center through the late 19th and 20th centuries and is known today as the home of Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th U.S. president, whose Spiegel Grove estate and presidential library sit within the city.

Settled 1816, platted 1817, by settlement grew around the federal Two Mile Square Reserve and Fort Stephenson after the War of 1812.

Where the name comes from

Known first as Lower Sandusky, for its position on the lower part of the Sandusky River, the town was renamed Fremont in 1849 to honor John C. Fremont, the explorer and soldier who had helped the United States acquire California during the Mexican-American War.

Before the town

Fremont occupies the site of Junquindundeh, a Wyandot village at the lower rapids of the Sandusky River; French traders kept a post nearby in the 1750s before British forces took the region after the French and Indian War. An 1882 county history records a Wyandot tradition of two 'cities of refuge' near these same rapids, considered neutral ground where warriors from warring nations could pass safely, and places a separate Delaware (Lenape)/Munsee village about three miles downstream. Before General Anthony Wayne's 1794-95 campaign broke organized Native resistance in the region, the Wyandot war chief Tarhe ('the Crane'), later a signer of the 1795 Treaty of Greenville, made his home at Lower Sandusky. An 1817 treaty opened this land to settlement.

Nations recorded here: Wyandot, Lenape (Delaware).

Timeline

  1. — The U.S. Army built a stockade and blockhouse, Fort Sandusky, on the west bank of the Sandusky River to guard supply lines in the War of 1812.
  2. — Captain Eleazar Wood rebuilt and enlarged the fort, which was renamed Fort Stephenson.
  3. — Major George Croghan's garrison of about 160 men repelled a British and Native assault on Fort Stephenson, killing the British assault commander with a single cannon shot from the gun "Old Betsy."
  4. — Croghansville, named for the fort's defender, was settled on the east side of the Sandusky River.
  5. — The federal Two Mile Square Reserve on the west side of the river was surveyed and offered for sale, forming the core of Lower Sandusky.
  6. — Lower Sandusky was designated the seat of the newly organized Sandusky County.
  7. — Lower Sandusky was renamed Fremont, for explorer John C. Fremont.
  8. — Rutherford B. Hayes, then Ohio's governor and soon to be U.S. president, moved to Spiegel Grove in Fremont; a bequest from his uncle Sardis Birchard that year endowed the city's public library.
  9. — Fremont's population reached 8,440, more than doubling the 1870 figure as cutlery and manufacturing firms including the Clauss Cutlery Company grew in the city.
  10. — The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center opened at Spiegel Grove, the first presidential library in the United States.

Stories

Old Betsy holds the line

By late July 1813, British Major General Henry Procter had failed twice to take Fort Meigs and turned instead to the smaller, more exposed Fort Stephenson at Lower Sandusky, held by only about 160 American regulars under 21-year-old Major George Croghan. Procter arrived on July 31 with roughly 390 British regulars and several hundred allied Native warriors and, after a day of bombardment, ordered a direct assault on August 2 against the fort's northwest angle -- the point Croghan had judged weakest and had quietly reinforced. Croghan had hidden the garrison's single six-pounder cannon, nicknamed Old Betsy, behind a screen at that same angle; when the attacking column under Lieutenant Colonel William Shortt closed to within thirty feet, the gun crew uncovered the cannon and fired point-blank into the packed ranks, killing Shortt and breaking the assault. The British lost 26 killed, 41 wounded, and 29 missing against a single American killed and seven wounded, and Procter withdrew the next day. Congress later struck a gold medal for Croghan, one of the few awarded for a War of 1812 land action, and Old Betsy still stands today, alongside a historical marker, on the fort's former ground in downtown Fremont.

A president's library, first of its kind

Rutherford B. Hayes settled at Spiegel Grove, on the edge of Fremont, in 1873, three years before he was elected the nineteenth president of the United States. His uncle and benefactor Sardis Birchard left the city $50,000 that same year to found a public library, which opened in 1874, and after Hayes's death in 1893 his son Webb built a library and museum on the Spiegel Grove grounds to house the former president's papers and collections. That building opened in 1916 as the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, the first purpose-built presidential library in the United States, a model that later presidents' libraries, run through the National Archives, would follow decades afterward.

82% of these days are measurements from a gauge inside Fremont; the rest are estimated from the nearest gauges around it.

48,745 days of records, 1893-04-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
