How Clyde began

Clyde grew from a claim taken up by Samuel Pogue in 1820, just after the War of 1812 land in this part of Ohio opened, and took its name from Clyde, New York. It became a brass-era automobile town when the Elmore Manufacturing Company built cars there until General Motors bought the firm in 1909 and moved production to Detroit, and later grew into an appliance-manufacturing center after Whirlpool Corporation began building washing machines at the former Clyde Porcelain Steel plant in 1952. The city is best known outside Ohio as the model for Sherwood Anderson's 1919 short-story collection Winesburg, Ohio, and is the birthplace of Union Major General James B. McPherson, the highest-ranking Union officer killed in the Civil War.

Where the name comes from

Clyde was named after Clyde, New York, following the common practice of Ohio settlers from New York and New England naming new towns for places they had left behind.

Before the town

Wikipedia's article on Clyde records only in general terms that the area, like the rest of this part of Ohio, was inhabited by the Wyandot in the 1700s, without naming a specific village, trail, or site at Clyde itself. Jesse Benton's cabin and Samuel Pogue's 1820 claim came after the 1817 Treaty of the Maumee Rapids had opened the region to American settlement. The wider area's Native history includes the Seneca as well as the Wyandot.

Timeline

  1. — Samuel Pogue acquired Jesse Benton's cabin claim "for a barrel of whiskey" and settled the site that became Clyde; he lived there until his death in 1828.
  2. — Clyde had no reliable public water supply; fire cisterns built at intervals in the streets and filled by surface drainage were relied on to fight fires.
  3. — James B. McPherson, the Clyde-born Union major general and highest-ranking Union officer killed in the Civil War, is honored in Clyde by a house museum at his birthplace.
  4. — General Motors acquired the Elmore Manufacturing Company, a Clyde brass-era automobile maker, and relocated production to Detroit in 1919; Louis Krebs subsequently founded the Clydesdale Motor Truck Company on the former GM site.
  5. — Sherwood Anderson published Winesburg, Ohio, a short-story collection widely understood to be modeled on his boyhood town of Clyde.
  6. — Whirlpool Corporation purchased Clyde Porcelain Steel and began building washing machines there.
  7. — Whirlpool expanded into the adjacent former Bendix Corporation property, becoming the area's sole washing-machine manufacturer for the following six decades.

Stories

A barrel of whiskey and a town takes root

The first cabin on the site of Clyde was built by Jesse Benton, but it was Samuel Pogue who gave the place its start as a community: in 1820, not long after the War of 1812 land here had opened to settlement, Pogue bought out Benton's claim for a barrel of whiskey and settled in for good, living there until his death in 1828. The transaction is one of the few details preserved from Clyde's earliest years, a small, plainly told story typical of how many Ohio town sites changed hands in this period -- for goods rather than cash, between men whose full histories were not otherwise recorded. By the time novelist Sherwood Anderson grew up there in the 1880s, the frontier trade that founded the place was long forgotten, but the same town became the model, decades later, for one of the most influential works of American short fiction, Winesburg, Ohio.
