How Cecil began
Cecil grew up in Crane Township around a post office first named Crane in 1866 and renamed Cecil, for a railroad official, in 1868; it was founded formally in 1871 as a junction where the Wabash Railroad and the Cincinnati Northern Railroad crossed. Nearby stood Paulding Furnace, an iron-smelting works fed by the Wabash and Erie Canal that closed after county residents destroyed the canal's water supply in the 1887 Reservoir War; the war's only fatality, militia private Fred Reeves, died on guard duty at Cecil during the unrest. The village peaked at 348 residents in 1890 and has since settled to a little under 150.
Incorporated 1871, by developed as a railroad junction.

Stories
A Militiaman's Death in a Bloodless Uprising
The Reservoir War of April 1887 is remembered, correctly, as a nearly bloodless uprising: several hundred Paulding County men dynamited and dug apart the Six Mile Reservoir near Antwerp, and the lone guard on duty there escaped with only a minor, self-inflicted wound. But the state's response reached all the way to Cecil, roughly a dozen miles south, where Governor Joseph B. Foraker had dispatched militia companies, a light battery, and a Gatling gun to restore order. It was there, not at the reservoir itself, that the episode's only fatality occurred: 19-year-old Private Fred Reeves, standing guard duty for his militia company, accidentally shot himself in the head and died instantly. His body was sent to Toledo for burial. The irony of the Reservoir War is that the mob who committed the actual destruction was never identified or punished, while the state's own show of force produced the single death connected to the whole affair -- a young soldier sent to guard against a riot that had, by the time he stood his post, already finished happening somewhere else.

Mostly estimated. Only 3% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Cecil - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.
48,836 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
