Deep dives about Carey

Long reads built from maps, newspapers and public records. All deep dives

How Carey began

Carey was platted in 1843 by R. M. Shuler and W. J. Buell on land they owned, and named for Judge John Carey, an early prominent resident of the region. Carey is home to an early settlement of Luxembourgers and to the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation, the destination of an annual pilgrimage. Wikipedia dates habitation at nearby Sheriden Cave to around 11,000 BC.

Settled 1843, platted 1843, by R. M. Shuler and W. M. Buell (given as W. J. Buell by Wikipedia), on land they owned.

Where the name comes from

Carey was named for Judge John Carey, whom the 1884 county history describes as President of the Indiana, Bloomington & Western Railroad on which the town sits, and as deeply interested in its success. Judge Carey, born in Virginia in 1792, had settled in what became Crawford Township with his family in 1823 or 1824.

Before the town

No named Wyandot village or documented trail is recorded at the Carey townsite itself, but Sheriden Cave, near the village, is dated by Wikipedia to habitation around 11,000 BC. Elsewhere in Wyandot County, the record includes the historic Wyandot nation and the Upper Sandusky reservation and removal.

Nations recorded here: Paleo-Indian.

Timeline

  1. — R. M. Shuler and W. M. Buell laid out the town of Carey, two years before Wyandot County itself was organized; the same year John Houck put up the first building, a frame hotel on Findlay (Main) Street that was still standing and in hotel use in 1884.
  2. — W. M. Buell, Carey's pioneer merchant, erected a one-story frame store, 22x80 feet, and opened with a general-merchandise stock valued at $10,000; McD. M. Carey, Judge Carey's son and a store clerk, claimed the honor of making the store's first sale.
  3. — Enos and William Wonder erect a mill at Carey, later run by Shuler; the Carey Mills proper begin in 1845 in a warehouse built by Buell & Welsh.
  4. — David Straw opens a small grocery in the fall with less than $50 in capital; by 1884 he is one of the three wealthiest men in the county.
  5. — The Gault House is built by John Houck and a partner about three years after the Commercial Hotel, the original frame building of 1843.
  6. — Christ's Evangelical Lutheran Church is organized in the Evangelical church of Carey; it meets in the United Brethren building from April 1859.
  7. — The Bible Society of Carey and vicinity is organized as an auxiliary of the American Bible Society.
  8. — The People's Bank is established by David Straw, H. B. Gage and O. and C. Poesnal with $50,000 capital; Straw buys out his partners in 1869 and takes his son H. Straw in as partner in 1876.
  9. — The Church of Our Lady of Consolation is established by Bishop A. Rappe of Cleveland, its foundation laid that summer on ground donated by David Straw and his wife; work stops until 1870 and the 30 by 65 foot church, costing $3,000, is finished in 1873 under Rev. Joseph P. Gloden.
  10. — A two-story brick schoolhouse with five departments, costing $8,000, replaces the frame school of 1855-56, which had followed Carey's first school of 1843.
  11. — Fire destroys the old buildings that stood where the Nye Block is built in 1882.
  12. — Carey has three railroads (the Findlay Branch, the Cleveland, Sandusky & Cincinnati line and the Columbus, Hocking Valley & Toledo), two hotels, a woolen mill and handle factory, cigar makers producing 200,000 to 300,000 cigars a year, and is described as a strong rival of Upper Sandusky.
  13. — Carey's population is 1,816, up from 692 in 1870 and 1,148 in 1880; it peaks at 3,901 in 2000 and is 3,565 in 2020.
  14. — Carey's Main Street was inundated in the great Ohio flood of March 1913, recorded in a surviving real-photo postcard.

Stories

Our Lady of Consolation and the Luxembourg settlers

Wikipedia describes Carey as home to an early settlement of Luxembourgers that continues to uphold its Luxembourg heritage. Each year an annual pilgrimage honoring Our Lady, Consoler of the Afflicted, is attended by crowds of people. The religious procession starts in the neighboring community of Frenchtown and ends in Carey, seven miles away, and it symbolizes the long journey of the Luxembourg immigrants and their search for new life in the United States. The Church of Our Lady of Consolation, according to the 1884 county history, was established in 1868 by Bishop Rappe of Cleveland on ground donated by David Straw and his wife, and its first church was finished in 1873.

David Straw, from a $50 grocery to the county's banker

David Straw was born in Pitt Township on March 28, 1826. In the fall of 1845 he opened a small grocery in the two-year-old village of Carey with a capital of less than $50, and by 1884 he was the only business man in Carey who had been in trade there since 1845, and one of the three wealthiest men in the county, a result the county history credits to his extraordinary energy and tact. He put up buildings that other merchants rented, donated the ground for Our Lady of Consolation Church in 1868, and in 1866 founded the People's Bank with $50,000 in capital. Within three years he bought out his partners and became its sole proprietor, and in 1876, when his son came of age, he gave him a $10,000 interest as a partner.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
