How Bowling Green began

Bowling Green grew from a scattering of cabins entered on the swamp ridge south of Portage in 1832 into Wood County's seat of government after an 1866-1870 fight that moved the courthouse here from Perrysburg. Its post office, and later the town itself, took the name of Bowling Green, Kentucky, suggested on the spot around 1834 by a passing mail carrier. Incorporated as a village in 1855 and a city in 1901, it boomed in the mid-1880s when natural gas and oil were struck beneath the surrounding farmland, then grew through the twentieth century around the state normal school that became Bowling Green State University. It remains the Wood County seat today.

Settled 1832 (Elisha Martindale's cabin, the first in the future corporation, built spring 1833 on an October 1832 land entry), platted town grew informally around the 1834 post office; formally incorporated, incorporated village, 1855; city, 1901, by local settlers; incorporation by Wood County and the State of Ohio.

Where the name comes from

The settlement took its name from its post office, established around 1834 at Jacob Stauffer's cabin. Veteran mail carrier Joseph (Chauncey) Gordon, asked to help settle a dispute over what to call the new office, offered the name Bowling Green -- after Bowling Green, Kentucky, a town on one of his earlier mail routes -- in exchange for a glass of cider, and it stuck.

Before the town

No Native village, mound, earthwork or named site specific to the future site of Bowling Green was found in any source consulted; the county's own 1897 history states plainly that no such evidence exists anywhere in Wood County. The area lay within the swamp forest inland from the Maumee that the Ottawa, Wyandot and allied nations used chiefly for hunting and seasonal travel rather than permanent settlement.

Nations recorded here: Ottawa, Wyandot.

Timeline

  2. — A post office named Bowling Green is established at Jacob Stauffer's cabin, the name suggested by mail carrier Joseph Gordon.
  3. — Bowling Green is detached from Plain and Center townships and incorporated as a village.
  4. — The Wood County seat formally moves from Perrysburg to Bowling Green after the county's 'Ten Years' War' court fight, and the new courthouse opens for business.
  5. — Gas is struck at 242 feet drilling a well at the county infirmary, an early local sign of the gas field that would soon transform the town.
  6. — The Bowling Green Natural Gas Company's first well strikes gas at 1,130 feet; within weeks gas is heating and lighting buildings downtown.
  7. — The present Wood County Courthouse, designed by Columbus architects Yost & Packard in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, is built and occupied.
  8. — Bowling Green is incorporated as a city.
  9. — A state commission selects Bowling Green, over 39 other Ohio communities, as the site of a new state normal school, citing its dry (no-alcohol) status and its central, rail-served location.

Stories

A tumbler of cider names the town

Around 1834, settlers gathered at Jacob Stauffer's cabin on a wooded ridge to petition for a post office but could not agree on what to call it. Joseph (Chauncey) Gordon, a mail carrier who had ridden routes on horseback since 1801 -- from Kentucky to Tennessee, then through the Ohio wilderness between Bellefontaine and Perrysburg -- happened to be passing through and stood listening from the cabin steps. He told Stauffer that for a glass of cider he would supply a name himself. Stauffer, who had a keg brought from Columbiana County, poured him one; Gordon swept his arm toward the landscape, toasted 'the new post office of Bowling Green' after a Kentucky town on one of his old routes, drank, and was mounting his horse again before the settlers finished writing the name into their petition. When the village incorporated in 1855, it kept the name the mail carrier had given its post office two decades earlier.

The courthouse built ahead of the lawsuit

Bowling Green did not wait for the courts to finish deciding whether it could have the county seat. Voters had approved moving the courthouse here from Perrysburg in an October 1866 election, but a contestant fought the result for years, through a recount, an 1868 trial and a final appeal the Ohio Supreme Court did not dismiss until August 1869. Bowling Green's backers broke ground on a new courthouse anyway in June 1868 and laid its cornerstone on the Fourth of July, gambling that the litigation would go their way. It did, and county offices moved into the finished building in April 1870. That courthouse burned or was replaced within a generation; the present Wood County Courthouse, designed by the Columbus firm Yost & Packard in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, broke ground November 28, 1893, and was occupied by the county commissioners on August 31, 1896.

Gas turns a swamp town into a boomtown

In August 1884, drillers hit gas at 242 feet while boring a well for the Wood County infirmary, and by December the Bowling Green Natural Gas Company had organized to chase it further. Its first well struck the main reservoir at 1,130 feet on March 6, 1885; three weeks later it was shot with explosives and began flowing about 400,000 cubic feet a day. By April 1, 1885, gas piped through 475 feet of line was fueling a planing mill, and that evening, the town's own historian wrote, 'the people of Bowling Green knew that they had entered upon a new era.' Wells kept multiplying through the 1880s, and the fortunes made drilling and refining oil and gas still show along Wooster Street, where many of the town's oldest and largest houses date from the boom years.

A runaway train passes through

On May 9, 2001, a CSX freight train hauling tank cars of hazardous liquid -- including a car of molten phenol, a toxic and corrosive chemical -- left the rail yard at Toledo without its engineer, who had climbed down to fix a switch and could not catch back up as the train accelerated. For more than two hours it rolled south unmanned at up to 51 miles per hour, passing through Bowling Green among other Wood County communities while highway crossings were cleared ahead of it and national news crews scrambled to follow what reporters nicknamed the 'Crazy Eights.' A CSX road foreman, Jon Hosfeld, finally caught up in a locomotive, climbed aboard the moving train near Kenton, and brought it to a stop after a run of roughly 66 miles. No one was hurt and nothing spilled, but the incident exposed gaps in railroad safety procedure that regulators studied for years afterward.

56,917 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-31. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-03): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-03 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
