How Antwerp began
Antwerp was founded in 1841 on the Wabash and Erie Canal, in the northwest corner of Paulding County, and named for the Belgian port city of Antwerp. When the railroad reached the area the village center shifted toward the tracks, and by the late nineteenth century Antwerp had grown into the largest village in Paulding County, its economy built on logging and tile-mill industries substantial enough that the Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific Railway built it an unusually large depot. That depot, closed in 1976 and preserved by the local historical society, is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Antwerp sits closest to the site of the 1887 Reservoir War, when Paulding County residents dynamited and dug apart the nearby Six Mile Reservoir.
Settled 1841, platted 1841.
Where the name comes from
Named after Antwerp, the port city in Belgium.
Before the town
No Native American village, mound, or treaty site specific to Antwerp itself is documented in the sources checked. The village lies in Carryall Township, west of the former Ottawa Oquanoxa Reserve on the Auglaize River in Brown Township. The Six Mile Reservoir just east of the village, built in 1840 to supply the Wabash and Erie Canal, has no recorded Native American association in the sources consulted.
Nations recorded here: Odawa (Ottawa).
Timeline
- — The Six Mile Reservoir, about 2,000 acres formed by damming and diking a creek just east of the future village, is built to supply the Wabash and Erie Canal.
- — Antwerp is founded on the Wabash and Erie Canal and named for the Belgian city.
- — The village's population reaches 717.
- — Population rises to 1,275, a 77.8 percent increase over the previous decade, as logging and tile-mill industries expand.
- — The Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific Railway builds a depot at Antwerp notably larger than typical for a village its size, reflecting its logging and tile-mill trade.
- — Several hundred Paulding County residents dynamite and dig apart the dikes of the nearby Six Mile Reservoir, ending the canal era; the reservoir lay just east of Antwerp.
- — Antwerp's population peaks for the nineteenth century at 1,331, making it the largest village in Paulding County.
- — The Norfolk and Western depot (successor to the Wabash line) closes and is later purchased by the Antwerp Area Historical Society.
- — The Antwerp Norfolk and Western Depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Stories
The Depot the Timber Trade Built
By the late 1800s Antwerp had become the largest village in Paulding County, and its depot showed it. The surrounding Great Black Swamp, only recently drained, still carried heavy stands of timber, and Antwerp's logging trade, paired with a busy tile-mill industry making the clay drainage tile that was converting the swamp to farmland, gave the Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific Railway enough freight business to justify building a station well beyond what a village of Antwerp's size would normally warrant. The depot kept working under a later name, the Norfolk and Western, as railroads consolidated through the twentieth century, until it finally closed in 1976. Rather than let it be torn down, the Antwerp Area Historical Society bought the building, and in 1980 it earned a listing on the National Register of Historic Places -- a small-town depot preserved specifically because it had once been built too big for its town, a physical record of how much timber and tile Paulding County's swamp-clearing economy once moved through Antwerp.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
