How Andover Township, Ashtabula County began
Epaphras Lyman, of New Hartford, Connecticut, tried to settle what became Andover Township in 1805 or 1806 and lived alone in a cabin for roughly five years before marrying into the Brown family of Austinburg; the Zadock Steele family, arriving soon after, is remembered as the first family to settle permanently and build a log house. The township, first attached to Trumbull County's Vernon Township and then to Wayne Township after Ashtabula County organized in 1807, became independent as Andover in 1819. Future U.S. Senator Benjamin Wade arrived in 1823, years before his antislavery career took him to Jefferson. In 1859 the township's western village, West Andover, became a quiet staging point in John Brown's Harpers Ferry conspiracy, and afterward sheltered fugitives connected to the raid, including Brown's own son Owen.

Where the name comes from

A safe house for John Brown's son
When John Brown's raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry collapsed in October 1859, the manhunt that followed reached all the way back to the quiet farm township where some of the raid's preparations had reportedly been staged. West Andover, in the far southeastern corner of Ashtabula County, had already played a supporting role: John Henry Kagi, Brown's second-in-command, is said to have stored firearms and supplies nearby at King & Brother's cabinet manufactory in Cherry Valley as the conspiracy came together. After the raid failed and Brown was captured, his own son Owen -- one of the few raiders who escaped the federal forces at Harpers Ferry -- made his way back toward this corner of Ohio along with another fugitive remembered only as Merriam of Boston. West Andover's residents took them in, and organized a real, if informal, security system to protect them: passwords, signals, and armed men ready to rendezvous if federal agents came looking. It was a rare moment when a small Western Reserve farm community found itself directly entangled in the machinery of the nation's most famous act of armed abolitionist resistance.
