Reported conflicts
-
As a director and consultant for Harken Energy Corporation, sold 212,140 shares on June 22, 1990, netting roughly $848,560; weeks later Harken reported an unexpected $23.2 million quarterly loss and its stock fell from about $4 to $1.25 a share, prompting an SEC investigation into whether he traded on non-public information. The SEC's investigation found he had a 'preexisting plan' to sell, played only a 'relatively limited role' in Harken's management, and was not aware of most of the items producing the loss; it brought no enforcement action. He also filed the required disclosure of the sale about 34 weeks late, a violation for which he was not charged. This occurred a decade before the 2000 campaign but recurred as a line of media scrutiny during it.
