Where they stand
Consumer protection and debt collection
Paraphrase of a linked source, not their words:
Ran for re-election on her first-term record: rebuilding Ohio's crime laboratories with DNA testing capability, a consumer-protection division that would be recognized nationally in 2000 as the country's most outstanding such agency, and being the only Ohio Attorney General to collect over $1 billion owed to the state.

State fiscal oversight
Paraphrase of a linked source, not their words:
Campaigned on continuing and extending the work of outgoing Republican Auditor Jim Petro, casting herself as the more aggressive choice to recover public funds lost through the era's wave of corporate accounting collapses (Enron, WorldCom and similar cases), and pledged vigilant fiscal oversight of Ohio's forthcoming roughly $5 billion school-construction program.

Accepted campaign contributions from Tom Noe, a major Republican donor later convicted of stealing from a $50 million state rare-coin investment fund he managed for the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation, before that fraud became public; returned a combined $17,100 in Noe-connected donations together with Jim Petro and Ken Blackwell once it did. No source documents any criminal charge or ethics finding against Montgomery personally arising from Coingate.

During the 2002 Auditor race, opponent Helen Knipe Smith alleged Montgomery, as sitting Attorney General, had appointed lawyers and their associates to outside special-counsel contracts while those same lawyers contributed roughly $750,000 to Montgomery's campaign and roughly $1 million to the Ohio Republican Party. Montgomery called the characterization 'false and misleading' and said many contributing lawyers received no state work from her office. No Ohio Ethics Commission action, court ruling or independent investigation substantiating or refuting the characterization was found; it remains a contested campaign-trail allegation, not an adjudicated finding.
