Attended and spoke at an April 1996 event at the Hsi Lai Buddhist Temple in Los Angeles that netted the DNC close to $65,000 from donors. In September 1997 three nuns from the temple testified to the Senate that the temple had illegally reimbursed guests for their donations. Gore said he did not know the gathering was a fundraiser, calling it 'community outreach'. Maria Hsia, co-chair of the event, was indicted in February 1998 on charges of conspiracy and making false statements, the indictment charging that some donors were reimbursed illegally by the temple; in March 2000 she was convicted of illegally funneling more than $100,000 in contributions to Democratic candidates in 1996.
