Life story
William Doud Packard was born in Warren in 1861, the older brother of James. The fetched article gives no schooling.
With James he started Packard Electric in 1890 and helped create the first Packard car in 1899. The company moved to Detroit in 1903 and merged with Studebaker in 1954; the last Packard was built in 1958.
He gave land for Packard Park, paid for the W.D. Packard Music Hall and the Packard Band, and in 1915 commissioned a summer home at Chautauqua Institution.
He married twice, to Anne Storer and Kathryn Bruder, and died in 1923 at 62.
