Life story
Lyman Beecher was born in New Haven in 1775, raised by an uncle after his mother died, and graduated from Yale in 1797. He began preaching in 1798.
He gained fame for a sermon against dueling in 1806 and spent sixteen years as minister in Litchfield, Connecticut, followed by a call to Boston, where he preached on temperance.
In 1832 he became president of Lane Seminary in Cincinnati. Students there held an 18-day debate on slavery in 1834, and after trustees tried to restrain them, many left; they are known as the Lane Rebels.
He was tried for heresy and acquitted in 1835. He fathered thirteen children, including Harriet Beecher Stowe and Henry Ward Beecher, and died in Brooklyn in 1863.
