Life story

John Roseboro was a catcher for the Dodgers, Twins and Senators over fourteen seasons. He was the Dodgers' catcher in World Series wins in 1959, 1963 and 1965, made six All-Star teams and won Gold Gloves in 1961 and 1966, with a .989 career fielding percentage.

On August 22, 1965, Giants pitcher Juan Marichal hit him with a bat, opening a cut that took 14 stitches. Roseboro said later he had been getting back at Marichal for throwing at Maury Wills.

The two became friends in the 1980s, and Marichal thanked him in his 1983 Hall of Fame speech. Roseboro died in 2002.
