Life story

John Legend was born John Roger Stephens in Springfield on December 28, 1978. He began piano at four, sang in his church choir at seven, skipped two grades, and entered Springfield's North High School at 12, graduating as salutatorian before enrolling at the University of Pennsylvania at 16. After Penn he worked as a management consultant while writing and recording, met Kanye West in 2001, and took the stage name Legend; his debut album Get Lifted (2004) won three Grammys including Best New Artist. He went on to win 12 Grammys, the 2015 Oscar for 'Glory' from Selma, a 2017 Tony as a producer of Jitney and a 2018 Emmy as a producer of Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, completing an EGOT. Ohio claims him through Springfield, where he has played benefit concerts and where a school-district theatre in the old Springfield High School building carries his name.

Making Black history, as promised

Growing up in Springfield, John Stephens began the piano at four and was singing with his church choir at seven. Bright enough to skip two grades, he started at North High School at 12. At 15 he entered a McDonald's Black History Month essay contest whose prompt asked, 'How do you intend to make Black history?' He answered that he would become a successful musician, and won. He graduated as North's salutatorian and left for the University of Pennsylvania at 16. In 2018 an Emmy made him the first Black man to hold an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony.

A theatre in the old high school

Springfield High School was built in 1911 on South Limestone Street to a design by Albert Pretzinger of Dayton, modelled on the Library of Congress. In 1960 it became South High School when the city split into North and South, and it closed in 2008 when the two were merged again and the new Springfield High School rose on the North campus, where Legend had gone to school. With a large state grant and local donations, the old building reopened in 2015 as the Springfield Center of Innovation, known as The Dome. The school district runs a career centre and the John Legend Theater inside it.
