Life story
John Havlicek was born in Martins Ferry in 1940 to parents who ran a general store, and he grew up in the Ohio Valley alongside his boyhood friend Phil Niekro. At Bridgeport High School he was quarterback and captain in football, hit over .440 in baseball and averaged more than 30 points a game in basketball, earning All-Ohio honours in all three sports as a senior. At Ohio State he roomed with Jerry Lucas, and the Buckeyes won the 1960 NCAA title, three Big Ten titles and 78 of 84 games; he was captain and an All-American in 1962. Drafted by the Boston Celtics, the Cleveland Pipers and the Cleveland Browns, he was the Browns' last cut in training camp, then spent 16 seasons with the Celtics, winning eight championships, the 1974 Finals MVP award and 13 All-Star selections, and making the steal Johnny Most immortalised in 1965. Bridgeport High named its gymnasium for him in 2007, and after his death in 2019 his hometown held a memorial service there.

Stories
The last cut in Cleveland
In 1962 three teams wanted Havlicek: the Boston Celtics of the NBA, George Steinbrenner's Cleveland Pipers of the American Basketball League, and the Cleveland Browns, who drafted him although he had played football only as an Ohio State freshman under Woody Hayes. He had been Bridgeport High's quarterback and captain for four years, and he went to the Browns' camp as a wide receiver. He was the last player cut; the Browns kept the future all-pro flanker Gary Collins. Wikipedia notes that his brief football tryout was one reason the Pipers' bid to join the NBA failed. He became a full-time Celtic and won eight championships.
Hondo comes home to Bridgeport
In August 2019, four months after his death, about 150 people gathered in the John J. Havlicek Gymnasium at Bridgeport High School for a memorial service. Former teammate Jerry Mountain remembered a 'yes, sir; no, sir' boy who never swore and always carried a basketball under his arm, and said Havlicek took his first steps toward the Hall of Fame in a 1956 game at Cadiz when he alone outscored the Cardinals. Butch Thomas, two years behind him in school, said the town had torn down Lansing School, the old Bridgeport High and the bleachers at Perkins Field, but could not tear down their memories of him. The Bridgeport board announced a John Havlicek Memorial Scholarship, and the boys' team unveiled home uniforms with 'Hondo' on the chest.
