Life story

James Madison Tuttle was born in 1823 near Summerfield, then in Monroe County and now in Noble County. He was educated in the common schools of Ohio and Indiana and moved to Farmington, Iowa, in 1846.

He was a farmer and merchant, then sheriff and county treasurer in Van Buren County. In April 1861 he raised a volunteer company and became a captain, and by September a colonel of the 2nd Iowa Infantry.

At Fort Donelson in February 1862 he led a charge and, by one account, planted the first Union flag inside the fort. He commanded a brigade at Shiloh, became a brigadier general in June 1862 and later led a division in the Vicksburg campaign.

He resigned in 1864, ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1863 and for Congress in 1866, served in the Iowa House, and invested in mining and manufacturing in the West. He died in Arizona in 1892 and is buried in Des Moines.
