Life story

Daniel McCook Jr. was born in Carrollton in 1834 into the McCook family, whose many sons served the Union. He graduated from the University of Alabama at Florence in 1858, read law in Steubenville and moved to Leavenworth, Kansas, where he practiced with William T. Sherman and the Ewing brothers.

In 1861 he led a militia company that joined the 1st Kansas Infantry, and he was sick with pneumonia when the regiment was badly hurt at Wilson's Creek. At Shiloh he was a chief of staff, and in July 1862 he became colonel of the 52nd Ohio Infantry.

He commanded brigades under Sherman. On June 27, 1864, he led the assault at Kennesaw Mountain and was shot in the right lung; before the charge he is said to have recited lines from Macaulay's 'Horatius' to his men.

He was promoted to brigadier general in July 1864 and died on July 21 at Steubenville. He is buried at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati.
