Life story
Daniel Drake was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, in 1785. As a teenager he went west and studied medicine in Cincinnati under Dr. William Goforth from 1800 to 1805, then finished at the University of Pennsylvania.
He set up his medical practice in Cincinnati in 1807 and wrote about the town's land, climate and diseases. His 1815 book on Cincinnati became an early portrait of a Western river city.
In 1819 he helped organize the Medical College of Ohio, and later he edited The Western Journal of the Medical and Physical Sciences for two decades. In 1846 he helped found the Ohio State Medical Society.
His long work on the diseases of the Mississippi Valley appeared in 1850-54. He rejoined the Medical College faculty in 1852 and died in Cincinnati that November. He is buried at Spring Grove Cemetery.
