Life story

Clyde Kendle Tingley was born on January 5, 1881, on a farm near London, Ohio. When his wife Carrie developed tuberculosis, doctors advised a warmer climate, and the family moved to New Mexico in 1910.

He served on Albuquerque's city council in 1916-1917 and, after the city switched to commission government, as commissioner from 1922 to 1935. He was elected governor in 1934 as a New Deal supporter and re-elected in 1936, the first New Mexico governor to serve two consecutive full terms.

As governor he opened hospitals, including Carrie Tingley Hospital for children, and revived the State Fair in 1938; its Tingley Coliseum carries his name. He also introduced Siberian elms to Albuquerque, whose pollen locals called 'Tingley's dandruff.' He was Albuquerque chairman from 1940 to 1953 and died in 1960.
