Life story

George Crile was born in Chili, Ohio, in 1864. He graduated from Ohio Northern University in 1885 and took his M.D. at Wooster Medical College in 1887, then studied in Vienna, London and Paris.

He taught at Wooster, then at Western Reserve University from 1900, and was chair of surgery at Lakeside Hospital in Cleveland from 1910.

In 1906 he performed the first successful direct whole-blood transfusion, and he developed 'shockless' surgery with balanced anesthesia. He designed the Crile clamp and co-founded the American Association for Cancer Research (1907).

He served in the army medical corps in World War I, helped found the Cleveland Clinic in 1921, and died in Cleveland in 1943.
