The most walkable ZIP codes in Ohio

1,229 of 1,233 Ohio ZIP codes have a figure; the median one has 5.6 of 20.

A walkable ZIP code puts homes, stores, transit stops and jobs close enough together that a trip on foot is realistic, not just possible: short blocks, sidewalks that connect, and destinations within a mile rather than five. Ohio's most walkable places cluster in the dense, pre-automobile cores of its biggest cities and a handful of college towns, while most of the state was built, or has grown, around the car.

This ranks the 25 Ohio ZIP codes with the highest walkability score, most walkable first. A high score describes the street network and the mix of nearby destinations; it does not by itself measure sidewalk condition, crime, or how safe a street feels to actually walk.

How this was measured

The EPA's National Walkability Index scores every census block group from 1 to 20 on three things that make walking practical: intersection density, distance to the nearest transit stop, and how mixed the jobs and homes are. The map shows each ZIP's population-weighted score in the EPA's four bands, from least walkable to most; the card breaks out the parts and adds the share of households with no car.

1,229 of 1,233 ZIP codes have a figure; ZIP codes without one are left off the list, not counted as zero. Ties are broken by ZIP code.

Every ZIP code's own page carries the full detail behind its figure, and the Walkability topic page ranks the whole state.
